Price increases and controls
Sir, — The executive director of the Grocery Manufacturers’ Association, Mr E. Newman, considers there is no cause for alarm about rising grocery prices; I do not suppose there is for someone on his salary. Perhaps he has not noticed that the hundreds of prices legally allowed to rise under the so-called freeze were only the tip of the iceberg. Hundreds more increased by up to as much as 50 per cent by devious means, such as inferior quality, smaller packets and sizes at the original price to name but a few. More of the alarm he speaks of should have been felt in the Trade and Industry Department over these practices. — Yours, etc., D. G. HEARD. April 9, 1984.
