Schools’ softball titles
The Burnside High School boys’ team acquitted itself well against the tough North Island school sides in the finals of the national secondary schools’ softball championships in Auckland at the week-end.
Burnside, coached by the Canterbury softball captain, Graeme Anderson, clinched third place with a good win over Mana College (Porirua), which included some far more experienced players. . Anderson said that the result was very pleasing. “It was such a young and small side.”
The Burnside players had batted tremendously, though the infielding was a little suspect, he said. Burnside, which was representing the South Island in the national finals for the third year in a row, won two tournament. awards. Grant McCarroll was the top batter with an average of .500 (10 hits out of 20) and Andrew Martin batted in the most runs — six.
