Second bad week for shares

More than 2 per cent was this week sliced off the total sharemarket capitalisation — the value of the shares of all companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. The NZU index, which closed at 1297.49 points the previous Friday, ended the week yesterday at 1267.93 — a loss of 29.56 points for the week. The previous week it lost 58.78 points — or 4.3 per cent. After a sharp fall on Monday bargain hunters moved in and pushed prices back up on Tuesday, but Wednesday saw another reversal and prices began to slide again, a trend which continued for the rest of the week.

However, the market took on a steadier tone yesterday, as 45 falls were almost balanced by 37 rises, and the NZU index fell a little less than two points. Share table, national sales, page 23
