Drinks in hospital
Sir, — The offering of alcoholic drinks in the Southern Cross Trust Hospital cannot bring it into the 1980 s, as stated by your correspondent, David Parkes. It amounts to
endorsement of the use of alcohol. Such an endorsement of a mindaltering drug is almost irresponsible by both the hospital and doctors involved. I am sure that the hospital is excellently run, and that the treatment by both the staff and doctors is competent and compassionate. I wish David Parkes a speedy recovery. But the problems with alcohol use in the community are so serious that any endorsement of the product by the medical world must be a retrograde step. — Yours, etc., RAY SPRING, President, N.Z. Temperance Alliance,
Christchurch Council. March 7, 1984.
