Cyclists’ behaviour
Sir, — Dennis Wilkinson should be made aware of the reasons for cyclists’ committing the offences of which he complains in his letter of March 8. Many cyclists do not carry adequate lights because bicycle lighting systems sold in this country are sadly inadequate. Cyclists ignore traffic lights because traffic lights ignore cyclists. AH road users should show consideration for one another, and motorists are as guilty as cyclists of failure in this regard. However, the cyclist who rides unlit or who runs red lights will be the only loser in an accident. The motorist has more power and more protection, and must take the responsibility of using his potentially lethal vehicle safely. The efforts of the Ministry of Transport should be used against irresponsible drivers, not foolhardy cyclists. — Yours, etc., RUTH WIGNALL. March 8, 1984.
