Maori language

Sir,—lt was apparent from a recent talk-back session that many Europeans are disturbed by the television programme “Te Karere.” A little imagination may bring some understanding. Perhaps these people could envisage a takeover of New Zealand by a foreign country. The newcomers would soon run everything, from Parliament to schools to industries, and this would result in the disappearance of the English language in perhaps 80 years. Is it not possible that the English-speaking people would want to preserve their own culture, especially the language? Would they not, like the Maori, fight for the right to have a fiveminute programme a day in their own language? “Te Karere” has been permitted after 140 years of English rule. Surely this should not be begrudged.—Yours, etc.,

B. I. TAINUI. March 6, 1984.
