Cost of concert
Sir,—We note with a certain amount of wry amusement the “disappointment” of the promoter of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s concert tour that the citizens of Dunedin have bought only 569 seats. As music lovers and admirers of Dame Kiri, we would greatly enjoy attending one of her concerts; but we feel that a $4O-$75 cost is quite unreasonable for any solo artist. Dunedin must have come to the same conclusion. A quick estimate of likely costs, including hire of the Town Hall, a share of travel costs, hotel bills, front-of-house expenses, and even a sizeable orchestra, comes to about $15,000. If the promoter sold his required number of 2000 seats at the lowest ticket Erice of $4O there would be $65,000 ) divide and that is only for one concert. It is sad that on one of Dame Kiri’s rare visits to her own country the concerts are closed to all but the very well-to-do. — Yours, etc.,
ANNE and MICHAEL MACLEAN. March 7, 1984.
