Assistance for festival
Sir,—Your front page he&lline of March 7: “Arts Council will not fund festivals” is erroneous. The Arts Council financially supports
the Christchurch Festival, both directly and indirectly to a large degree. Further Government money from the Ministry of Recreation and Sport fund has substantially supported the festival. It should be noted however, that the contribution of the Christchurch City Council was nil. The Arts Council made a direct grant of $l2OO, the full amount requested, toward the “Paperchase” exhibition at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. The Southern Regional Arts Council, which is an integral part of and whose funds derive solely from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, allocated $9950 directly to the festival. In addition, many of the performing companies appearing in the festival are heavily subsidised by the Arts Council, including Limbs, the New Zealand Ballet, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Court Theatre.— Yours, etc.,
BRETT RILEY, Chairman Southern Regional Arts Council. March 8, 1984.
