Paparua’s best gardens
Paparua County’s premier garden is that of Mr and Mrs Morton Alexander, of 104 Springs Road, Sockburn.
The garden also won four awards in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s recent summer garden competitions, including the premier award. In the Christchurch Beautifying Association’s summer competition the garden won the Hack Cup for gardens on streets served by public transport. Second equal in the Papa-
rua competition were Mr and Mrs A. K. Asher, 29 Middlepark Road, and Mr and Mrs B. Lingham, 13 Montague Street. For the third year running the award for the best farm property went to Mr and Mrs B. Owens in Ellesmere Road. The chairman of the County Council’s reserves committee, Mrs N. M. Langdon, said that gardens were again of a high standard, a number having improved since last year. Best individual garden.— Broadfield-Ladbrooks Ward: J. F. Smith, Oke-Over, Springs Road. Halswell District Community Council: D. J. Dwyer, 137 Halswell Junction Road. Hornby District Community Council: Mr and Mrs Alexander. Halswell Rural Ward: R. W. Gardner, 8 Candys Road. Islington Ward: B. R. Lingham. Prebbleton Ward: C. L. Gallagher, 553 Springs Road. Sockbum District Community Council: A. K. Asher. Tai Tapu Ward: M. E. Oldfield, Davis and Tai Tapu roads. Templeton Ward: C. A. Bailey, Shands
and Trents roads. West Melton Ward: A. and V. Lea, Rolleston Road. Yaldhurst W<a r d R. M. White, 6 Coronado Place.
Best commercial garden: White Heron Travel Lodge, Memorial Avenue.
Best garden of a house with a limited frontage: D. A. Diggs, 57 Penruddock Rise. Best industrial garden: Associated British Cables, Main South Road.
Best school garden; Riccarton High School, Main South Road.
