Campaign comes to Chch

The Labour Party’s Added Value Campaign arrived ,in Christchurch yesterday, after covering about 4000 km on the road during the last three months.

The campaign, headed by the member of Parliament for Papanui, Mr Mike Moore, advocates further processing of New Zealand’s traditional export products to earn more overseas funds and to create jobs. It also advocates a comprehensive overseas marketing strategy and the promotion of horticulture and tourism.

Mr Moore, accompanied

by the member of Parliament for Eastern Hutt, Mr Trevor Young, and the Labour candidate for Rangiora, Mr Brian Tomlinson, took the Added Value Campaign to the plant of Ashley Meats, near Kaiapoi, where they spoke to about 100 workers and toured the works yesterday morning.

Mr Moore said that Ashley Meats provided a fine example of what the Labour Party was talking about in its campaign. The firm processed and packaged its products specifically for overseas markets, such as

Germany. Since December, when the campaign was launched, Mr Moore has toured in its mobile home headquarters from Whangarei and through the North Island. The van has travelled 4000 km and provided a base for about 80 meetings. While on the road, Mr Moore has been selling copies of his latest book, “The Added Value Economy,” which outlines the Labour Party’s ideas for New Zealand’s trading future as a negotiated economy based on manufactur-

ing, adding value, further processing, and tourism. Mr Moore said the campaign had been going “incredibly well.” The only hitches so far were when the van’s starter motor had failed, when the van had a flat tyre, and when it was towed away in Gisborne. Yesterday afternoon Messrs Moore and Young took the campaign to Temuka and Waimate. Today they will travel to Oamaru and Dunedin. Mr Moore said the campaign would finish at Invercargill next week.
