Cycle trial to Steele
PA Te Awamutu Murray Steele took the limelight with a brilliant win in the 1000 m time trial on the second day of the Healing New Zealand cycling championships at Te Awamutu yesterday. Steele cut 1.4 s from Craig Adair’s time but had to wait 20 hours for his chance to take the gold. On Wednesday night rain interrupted the event with only
Steele, the defending titleholder, still to ride. This left Adair, ranked fifth in the world, the leader with the West Coast North Island pair, Barry Prior and Anthony Cuff, next best. An elated Steele rode a personal best time and N.Z. race record to push the Commonwealth champion, Adair, back to second for the second year running.
