World catamaran titles
PA Wellington Two Australians, Brad Schafferius and Brian Hooper (both of Queensland) each won a race in the world A class catamaran championships at Eastbourne, Wellington, yesterday. Schafferius won the first race and came third in the second, and now leads the points table from another Australian, Allan Goodall, and the New Zealand national champion, Andy Brown. Allowing Wellington’s Andy Brown to set the pace in . the first race, Schafferius made an indifferent start, two legs before the finish, and from then on he played it conservatively.
A tussle for second place developed, with Brown beating Goodall (from Victoria), by a two-second margin. Schafferius was not so at home in the second race, when the northerly increased to 25 knots. Instead it was Hooper who swept to the lead and held it for the last three triangles, followed closely by Goodall, who showed the style that put him in second place at last year’s world contest in Italy. Schafferius finished third, but nearly tripped his boat into a cartwheel in the choppy . seas. *. $ Platings after 2 races: Brad Schafferius (Australia), 1; Allan Goodall (Australia), 2; Andy Brown (New Zealand), 3.
