Hobbs notable omission

By KEVIN McMENAMIN The omission of Jock Hobbs is the main surprise in the Canterbury team for the national finals of the Fresh Up seven-a-side rugby tournament at Feilding on Saturday. Hobbs has seemingly missed out to another loose forward from his own Christchurch club, the somewhat bigger and stronger Mark Treweek. However, Treweek is a proven seven-a-side exponent and he was one of Canterbury’s better players in the regional eliminations at Timaru last week-end.

The only other selection from outside of last year’s Ranfurly Shield squad is the University hooker, Merv Aoake. He also played at Timaru, but may have won his place on his fine form at trials the selector, Alex Wyllie, held on Wednesday night. The nine Canterbury players to travel to Feilding are: Wayne Smith, Andrew McMaster, Victor Simpson, Wayne Burleigh, Allan Lindsay, Treweek, Tony Thorpe, Don Hayes and Aoake. Canterbury has drawn pool one, and its opponents will be Auckland blue,

Buller and Hawke’s Bay. Pool two comprises Otago, Auckland gold, Bay of Plenty and Wellington. Nearly all Canterbury’s Ranfurly Shield players will be in action in a charity match to be played at Rugby Park on Sunday week. The game is being organised by the Sydenham Club for the benefit of David Wear, a senior B player who was made a paraplegic in a training accident last year.

The teams for the match are—

Alex Wyllie’s XV: Kieran Keane; Dean Kilworth, Victor Simpson, Andrew McMaster, Craig Green,. Wayne Smith; Bruce Deans; Dale Atkins; Rob Moffatt, Kerry Mitchell, Albert Anderson, Don Hayes; Phil Robson, Gwyn Williams, John Ashworth. Derek Arnold’s XV: Brent Nicoll; Bradley Stringer, Steve Hansen, Bill Anderson; Wayne Burleigh, Colon Williamson; Allan Lindsay; Anthony Dalzell; Andy Earl, Pat O’Gorman, Tony Thorpe, Jock Hobbs; Rob Mclntosh, Merv Aoake, Murray Davie.

Reserves for both teams: Mark Timms, Paul Tweed, Bernie Ryan, John Arbuckle, Mark Rhodes.
