Free entry to venue
The BEARS motor-cycle club race meeting at Ruapuna Park on Sunday afternoon will be one with a difference. Admission to the venue will be free. The club was formed last year to meet the competition needs of owners of nonJapanese bikes. The name BEARS was formed from the initials of the words, British, European and American racing. An organiser of Sunday’s meeting said that the club’s aim was to attract a big crowd, “If fathers have young sons who might like to watch the racing and inspect the bikes then they can come to the meeting knowing that it will not hurt their pockets,” he said. Prize money, which totals $2OOO, has been raised by club members, many of whom have made considerable contributions themselves.
Seventy-five competitors have entered the 17 races, and bikes and riders will come from Wellington as well as all parts of the South Island. The wellknown Kevin McCleary will appear on a Velocette 250. The classes for racing will be up to 350 cu cm, 350 cu cm to 500 cu cm, and an open class, which will be divided into two grades. Bikes of all vintages, shapes and sizes will be on display.
