VIEWERS’ VIEWS
Maori march
Sir,—TVl’s Sunday evening programme dealing with the Maori march — the hikoi — and the related Waitangi Day events was commendable in its subject. I would, however, criticise strongly captions and commentary which completely lacked explanation as to why the marchers did not meet our waiting Gover-nor-General. It was another example of inadequate commentary creating wrong impressions. When the hikoi were first stopped by the police the commentary stated, “No reasons were given.” No subsequent references were made to the hikoi’s inability to undertake that they would not disrupt the ceremonies, or to their declining the invitation for 100 of their number to meet the waiting Governor-General. Sir David Beattie’s actions were exemplary, and those of the police entirely realistic in the circumstances. Both these parties and TVl’s viewers deserved much more accurate reporting. The lack of balance in the programme to me clearly left unjust inferences, particularly on the police. — Yours, etc., W. H. HOBBS.
