Fairhall betters standard
Neroli Fairhall bettered the Olympic Games qualifying standard in the Christchurch Archery Club’s gold star tournament at the wppk-pnd Fairhall totalled 2469 points with rounds of 1230 and 1239. That was 19 points over the qualifying standard. There was an impressive performance by Joanne Jepson, of Christchurch, who is in only her second season in the sport. She scored 1206 points in the first round to become the third woman in New Zealand to earn a FITA 1200 star. Ann Shurrock, from Ash-
burton, another Olympic nominee, was 150 points below the qualifying mark at the week-end, but that was not surprising considering she had influenza. Richard Cook (Dunedin), also in his second season, and Rinus Spaan (Christchurch), gained their 1100 stars, both notable performances. Spaan was within striking distance of a 1200 star in the second round when he scored 1185, which included a perfect end at 70m. Another perfect end was scored by the Christchurch junior, Shaun Meldrum, over
30m. (A perfect end requires the archer to put three arrows in the Bcm diameter inner bull.) Results were: Men.—R. Spaan (Christchurch), (1124, 1185), 2309, 1; B. Inwood (Ashburton), (1075, 1157), 2232, 2; S. Downs (Blenheim), (1079, 1089), 2168, 3. Junior.—S. Meldrum (Christchurch), (809, 907), 1716, 1; M. Read (Christchurch), (529, 579), 1108, 2. Women.—N. Fairhall (Christchurch), (1230, 1239), 2469, 1; A. Shurrock (Ashburton), (1125, 1175), 2300, 2; J. Jepson (Christchurch), (1206, 1070), 2276, 3.
