Netball trialists
Three Canterbury netball players are among the 21 trialists for the New Zealand under-21 side to met a Young Australia team later in the year. They are Suzanne Camp, Catherine de Ruiter and Jan Pickering. Two days of trials for the team will be held at Rotorua’s Kuirau Park on FYiday and Saturday to decide the team for the threematch series in May and June. Camp, de Ruiter and Pickering are all students and have played senior club netball in Christchurch for the last few seasons.
Camp is a centre court player, who this year will switch from Technical to Burnside for her club play. She was a member of the Canterbury under-20 team, which last year won the Prudential under-20 tourna-
ment. De Ruiter, a defence player, who plays for the Hagley club, captained the Canterbury under-20 side in 1983. She has also been a Canterbury Country under--20 representative.
Pickering, the Burnside club’s goal shooter, was a member of last year’s national under-21 team and probably has the best chance of gaining selection this year. She was also a member of the New Zealand Universities team to tour Australia last year.
The national side will be announced on Saturday and the team will play the first test against Australia in Wellington on May 26. The second test will be three days later in Dunedin and the final match will be in Christchurch on June 2.
