English players to join United
Christchurch United will have two English imports in its squad when the Rothmans Soccer League programme begins early in May. Laurie Blyth, United’s new coach, confirmed yesterday that Steve Baker, who spent four years at West Ham United as a reserve goal-keeper, and Andy Harrison, a striker with Burton Albion in the northern premier league, will join the club. Baker, aged 22 and 1.95 m tall, is now with the Isthmian League club, Leytonstone, at present leading that league. Mr Blyth received a “fairly glowing report” on Baker from West Ham’s manager, John Lyall. “He wrote that had West
Ham not had a good set of goal-keepers, he would probably have been signed on,” said Mr Blyth. Harrison, aged 25, and 1.82 m, spent four years with Newcastle United in his apprenticeship, before transferring to a non-league club.
A sales manager in England, Harrison has been with Burton Albion for two seasons, and was the team’s leading scorer last winter. Their addition to United’s squad, already bolstered by the signings of the current New Zealand internationals, Ceri Evans and Steve Wooddin, round off what looks likely to be a squad capable of returning the league title to Christchurch after an absence of six years.
