Junior bowler in last 16
Ray Hunt, a junior from Riccarton W.M.C., caught some people by surprise when he made it through to the last 16 yesterday in the Christchurch tournament in the Countrywide satellite bowls series.
However, while Hunt may not be widely known in Christchurch he does have a notable victory to his credit He shifted north last year from South Otago and it was as a member of the Balclutha club that he played second for Bruce
McNish (Milton) when McNish won the Dominion fours in Wellington two years ago. Hunt won his first two section games yesterday, but his chances of winning the section and qualifying for yesterday’s final round looked slender in the extreme when he trailed Arthur Ruddick (Meadowbank), also a twogame winner, 9-19. But Hunt staged a great recovery to win, 21-20, and so aiiminate Ruddick, who **
won the Dunedin tournament in the series, which also has sponsorship from Radio New Zealand, before Christmas.
Thirty-two players, one from each section, were left after the first three rounds, and they were halved to 16 by another round. It is these 16 who will start competing for the $l7OO in prizemoney at Edgeware today. Hunt’s opponent this morning, when the games are extended from 21-up to 31-up, will be Wally Jfilkin-
son (Beckenham) and the rest of the draw is Murray King (Woolston W.M.C.) v. Neville Poole (Sumner), Geoff Cameron (Darfield) v. Pat Doig (Elmwood), Robin Howman (Burnside) v. Bernie Johns (Christchurch), Travis Coup (Kaiapoi) v. Jack Dale (Papanui), Stan Lawson (Sydenham) v. Bill Fiecken (Beckenham), Laurie Prouting (Kirwee), v. Owen Tomlinson (Papanui) and Noel Tomlinson (Hornby W.M.C.) v. Bill McDonald (Spreydon).
