Nuclear-powered warships
Sir, — Visits by nuclear-powered frigates are becoming more frequent An American frigate is visiting Dunedin soon, presumably by invitation, because I cannot see any military reason. My guess is that the Muldoon Government is trying to draw attention away from unemployment, which is its weak point economically, to provoke the peace movement into violent protest as it did with Hart in 1981, and then raise the cry of law and order, and to frighten the public into supporting the Government’s policy of maintaining the A.N.Z.U.S. military alliance, and thereby opposing the policies of the New Zealand, Social Credit and Labour Parties. I hope that women and young people who are so vitally concerned with the future will not be fooled by this red herring when it comes to voting. A vote against A.N.Z.U.S. is a vote for nuclear peace. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. March 3, 1984.
