Culverden ewe fair quieter

Bidding at the Culverden ewe fair yesterday lacked the keenness evident at other North Canterbury fine-wool ' ewe fairs earlier in the : season. Although prices were much 1 better than at last year's Cui- ! verden fair, which was held • during the height of a long ' drought, demand fell away i near the end of the sale. I The yarding of two-tooths I was only 3917, well down on ! last year's total of 7546. The slaughter of many ewe lambs last season because of the drought has contributed to the smaller yardings this season at most fairs. However, the adult yarding at 12,175 was almost 1700 more than last year's figure. Leading vendors in the twotooth section had a consistent sale and some of the medium condition sheep looked good buying. The top price was $36 for a pen of Corriedales sold bv A. F. S. and W. H. Rutherford, Montrose, and bought by a Mid-Canterbury farmer who had purchased several pens of top quality sheep at the Amberley and Hawarden fairs. The Rutherfords sold 1205 two-tooths at an average of $31.65. Their bottom price was $3O. D. R. Fraser, Mount Bengar. averaged $32.15 for 594 Corriedale two-tooths and had a top price of $34.80 and a low of $30.40. The only other twotooths to sell for more than $3O were two pens from D. F. Johns, High Grove, at $34 and $3l. Most of the other Corriedale two-tooths made from $24 to $2B. Halfbred two-tooths sold to $25 with some sales down to $19.60. The adult ewe sale started well, but prices fell away later in the day. A pen of four-year-old Corriedales from D. R. Fraser sold to $30.20 near the start, but this was the only pen to make more than $26. Last year Mr Fraser received $14.40. The top price at last year’s sale was $lB, recorded by A. F. S. and W. H. Rutherford for five-year-old Corriedales. Yesterday they received $23. Five-vear-old Halfbreds from the Glens of Tekoa Estate, Culverden, made $25.20 and K. D. and S. I. Topp, Cascade, sold five-year-old Corriedales to $24.20. , The over-all quality of the yarding was described as very good. The top two-tooths were in splendid order and several well-conditioned lines of adults were offered.
