Endurance contest
Gold was discovered in the Mount Arthur tablelands in Nelson in 1865. Ten years later the steep, tortuous track used by the miners was replaced by a ILm benched track. Tomorrow morning, competitors in the inaugural Colin Baas Real Estate-sponsored north-west Nelson State Forest Park endurance event will set off over that same path. Competitors will be briefed this evening in Riwaka, and will set off early tomorrow from the Mount Arthur car park near the Flora Saddle. A 26km leg of running, including the steep descent to the Cobb hydro lake, will be followed by a six km paddle in canoes to the bottom of the lake.
From there, the competitors will have another 13km of shingle road running, over the Cobb ridge, down the valley to the power house. Then they will mount their bikes for the final section over the Takaka hill and onto the finishing line at Kaiteriteri.
Most of those taking part are expected to take between seven and eight hours to complete the course.
