Political polls

Sir,—l find R. L. Pluck’s comments (“The Press,” February 27) on the latest Heylen poll absurd and totally Labour-orientated. He states that the results are a sad commentary on our political apathy. Just because the results do not favour Labour, there is no need to call the majority of those polled apathetic. He should perhaps examine his values. He is backing a political group that few New Zealanders see as capable of running this country. Although Heylen polls are not totally accurate, they give a good indication of public feeling and support. Mr Pluck also lists National’s “failures” over the past years. I suggest that he views them alongside the world economy, and our 1983 inflation rate, while at the same time considering Labour’s dismal performance 10 years ago and the fact that there have only been two Labour Governments in the last 10, before he crucifies the average New Zealander for having commonsense. — Yours, etc., G. M. LORD. February 27, 1984.
