Visit to China

Sir,—l wonder why there have not been more letters objecting to the Mayor and some councillors being given a gift of $lOOO towards their sightseeing trip to China. This is a gross waste of ratepayers’ money, when most of them can easily afford to pay their own fare. Our next rate demand will be interesting. I, for one, am sure there will be the usual rise in rates for us all, so how can this trip be justified at this stage? — Yours, etc. J> MATTHEW. February 27, 1984.

Sir,—So the city councillors have finally decided to accept $lOOO each from the ratepayers of Christchurch to go on their visit to China. Helen Garrett was not elected by me to conduct overseas tours, nor was it ever suggested by anyone at any time that during her term as a councillor the ratepayers would contribute to her overseas travel. The citizens of Christchurch

are suffering from a rate burden, and to some people it is almost penal. One only has to go into the civic offices and see the palatial manner in which the city’s bureaucracy works to realise that these councillors are on a gravy train. With the overseas trips and sister city nonsense, it is quite obvious that they are just taking us for a ride.—Yours, etc., R. L. JOHNSON. February 27, 1984.
