Car horn concerto auditions on Sunday
A Christchurch 1 festival I
Car horns with concert potential will be auditioned on Sunday for starring roles in a special performance of the “Car Horn Concerto.” The auditions will be held at the Ministry of Transport testing station in Lichfield Street between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Philip Norman, composer of the “Car Horn Concerto,” will be at the car-park with his tuning fork to test the pitch of the cars.
The most tuneful one, and the most unusual, will win a place in the public performance of the concerto in Cathedral Square on March 9 at 1.10 p.m. Mr Norman wants plenty of single-tone car horns to provide the melody for his concerto, as well as a bus, truck, or
novelty horn to provide interest to the score. It will be the second performance of a concerto by car horns. Opus 1 was performed at a student festival several years ago. Mr Norman recalls that for Opus 1 he had a LandRover triple air horn and an Indian water buffalo horn. The former nearly stole the show, he said.
