Independence group aid
PA Auckland Peace and anti-nuclear groups have decided at a meeting in Auckland to raise funds and provide practical support for Pacific independence movements. . The five-day meeting opted to back a language scholarship scheme for Tahitian independence activists and the dispatch of Maoris sympathetic to the Melanesian independence cause to New Caledonia.
The meeting, organised by the Pacific Peoples AntiNuclear Action Committee and the Auckland NuclearFree and Independent Coalition, had nine guests from the Pacific, including independence activists from New Caledonia and French Polynesia. It was decided to set up a scholarship fund to teach English to Tahitians for international communication.
The meeting also decided to run a campaign to try to
dissuade New Zealanders from taking holidays in Tahiti because of what was claimed to be the “exploitative nature of the tourist industry there.” It was also decided to raise funds for the Malaysian independence movement in New Caledonia and send Maoris there to lend support to their cause.
