Prices mixed in active market
Falls continued to outnumber rises on the New Zealand sharemarket yesterday, and prices were mixed, but the N.Z.U.C. industrials index rose 5.5 points to 1340.22 while the miners edged up 0.08 points to 83.41, on a turnover of 3,999,014 shares worth a total of $5,854,193. Fletcher Challenge was steady at 310 c after a company statement that its half-year result would be announced on March 14. Freightways rose 7c to 412, while J. Smith put on 10c to 170. Rex Consolidated reacted to the news of an increased dividend and bonus issue with a gain of 15c, and Arthur Ellis rose 10c on news of a substantially higher profit. Bendon gave up 40c of this week’s sharp gains after the market learned of bonus issue, share split and higher dividend.
