Southland floods
Sir,—Our sympathy goes to all those unfortunate people who have suffered from the recent disastrous flooding in Southland. I enclose $lO to be forwarded to the Christchurch agency handling donations. However, I wonder if the flood is partly a result of land clearing over a long period for agricultural purposes. When the natural cover is interfered with over extensive areas to the extent that run-off is accelerated, one must expect disasters. I trust that when investigations are carried out regarding the severity of the floods, full consideration will be given to the part played by land development.— Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. January 30, 1984.
[The correspondent’s donation has been sent to the Bank of New Zealand, which will accept donations for the relief of flood victims — Editor.]
