“Crime capital”

Sir,—Varian Wilson (“The Press,” December 21, 1983) admitted that he had an expenses-paid visit to South Africa 40 years ago. Much has happened since then. It is time he went again, but this time without preconceived ideas about Soweto and other black areas. The 40,000 New Zealanders who visit that country annually find it an eye-opener and come away with a completely new conception of what South Africa and its people are all about. I do not believe Varian Wilson intends to be cruel, but by his ill-informed and ridiculous 40-year-old claims he is reducing the citizens of modern Soweto to inferior beings. They are not. With good will and co-operation from all sections of the country, Soweto’s problems are being overcome, the quality of life for the blacks is being improved, and in some fields they lead the world. Crime capital is piffle. Responsible people give credit where credit is due.—Yours, etc.,

BERT WALKER. February 1, 1984.
