Jenkins to ride in England
NZPA staff correspondent London
New Zealand’s Stephen Jenkins will be pitted against champion riders from 11 other countries in an inaugural world championship for National Hunt jockeys at Cheltenham on April 12.
Jenkins is one of six jockeys who have already accepted invitations to compete, the sponsors, British Railfreight, said in releasing details of the event.
Other acceptors are Frank Berry (Ireland), John Cushman (U.S.), Andreas Wohler (West Germany), Michel Chiral (France), and England’s John Francome, the 7-2 favourite with Brit-
ish bookmakers. Jockeys from Poland and the Soviet Union are also expected to vie for a first prize of £2500 (SNZS4OO). The championship will be decided over four races, three handicap hurdles and a handicap steeplechase.
Each event will have a field of 12 horses and the draw to determine who rides which horse will be made at Cheltenham, Britain’s premier National Hunt racecourse, the previous day. Overseas jockeys will arrive a few days before the championship and each will be attached to a Lambourn training stable to gain experience over English fences.
