Sharp rise in party support
PA Wellington The New Zealand Party has registered the fastest increase in popularity in 10 years of Heylen polls of political party support. This month’s poll shows the party’s support at 15 per cent, up 4 per cent on the poll last month. The party first registered on the polls four months ago.
The party’s main third party rival, Social Credit, has slumped further to 8 per cent, compared with 10 per cent last month. National has remained at 41 per cent, while Labour has slipped 1 per cent to 37. The poll • was commissioned for television’s “EyeWitness News” programme and indicated that New Zealand Party support was at the expense of each of the other three main parties. The party’s leader, Mr Bob Jones, is the preferred leader of 7 per cent of those polled, compared with 5 per cent last month. The Prime Minister; Mr Muldoon, suffered a 4 per it dr r -ilarity, tc
cem Jrop in popularity, to 32 per cent, while the Labour leader, Mr Lange, remained steady at 17 per cent.
The Social Credit leader, Mr Beetham, continued his slide, dropping 1 point to 3 per cent.
