Yacht overdue off east coast
PA Wellington Two sailors, one of them a Christchurch man, are overdue on a yacht voyage from Auckland to Lyttelton. The men set out on Tuesday last week on a voyage down the east coast which was expected to take eight to 12 days. They have no marine radio, only a transmitter receiver and an emergency locator beacon on board, and no-one has heard from them. Senior-Sergeant Anthony Lynch, of the Christchurch police, said the men’s families were very worried because of the sailors’ inexperience, as were the police and marine advisers. The yacht Bobby Shafto is a 10m steel-hull vessel which has taken the skipper, Mr William Lumley, aged of Auckland, the last
seven years to build. It is diesel-powered, singlemasted, and is white with a green band. Also aboard the yacht is Mr Lumley’s son David, aged 36, who flew up from Christchurch for the trip. Mr Lynch said the yacht was launched three weeks ago. Ships and aircraft have been asked to keep a lookout for the missing men.
