Wool firms slightly

PA Wellington Prices firmed slightly at the Wellington wool sale yesterday. There was a temporary pause in trading at the announcement that foreign trading had been suspended, but buyers decided to carry on. The Wool Board’s commercial manager, Mr Pat Patterson, said that the announcement had had no impact on prices. On offer were 13,629 bales of greasy wool and, by separation, 10,079 bales from Auckland and 6923 bales from Napier. The Wellington offering was drawn from the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Marlborough, and Wellington districts, and was made up of 48 per cent full ewe fleece, 37 per cent shorter early-shorn, 5 per cent hogget fleece, 6 per cent lambs’ wool, and 4 per cent oddments.

The official report said that the lush feed had marred a lot of slips through a high proportion of pen stain, and tenderness was evident in a lot of lines. Compared with Wednesday’s Christchurch sale, the market for Wellington wools was in sellers’ favour for full fleece, early-shorn and lambs’ wool, with skirtings unchanged, and clothing oddments, locks, and short pieces up to 10 per cent cheaper, the report said. Eastern Europe dominated the bidding, with support from New Zealand carpet mills and limited support from China. The Wool Board bid on 0.1 per cent of the offering (18 bales) and bought 10 bales. At the Christchurch sale the board bid on 0.9 per cent of the offering (200 bales) and bought 0.1 per cent (32 bales). Official range of prices:
