Condolence for Sir Keith
NZPA staff correspondent London Sir Keith Holyoake would be remembered for playing a large part in the evolution of the Commonwealth, said the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Sir Shridath Ramphal, yesterday. In a message of condolence sent to the New Zealand Prime Minister, Sir Shridath said, “It is with great regret that I have heard of the parting of Sir Keith Holyoake and send to you and the people of New Zealand a most sincere expression of sadness. “He has been a major figure not only in New Zealand but in Commonwealth affairs for many years during the evolution of the Commonwealth and
there are many who will remember him with respect and affection.
“Please convey these sentiments along with many commiserations to Dame Norma and the Holyoake family as new Zealand mourns a great son.” Sir Keith, a former Prime Minister and Governor-Gen-eral, was also a Knight of the Garter, eligible to have his crest and banner displayed at Windsor Castle.
As is the form on the death of a Knight of the Garter, the crest and banner will be taken down and kept in the castle's chapel.
At a later date, however, the banner will be presented and laid up on the altar at an evening service when members of his family may be present.
