Threat to Estuary wildlife

Sir,—All those who value wildlife around the Estuary will agree with the letter from Baden Norris in which he expresses disgust at the proposal to operate helicopters in the area. The booklet “Planning for the Avon-Heathcote Estuary,” issued by the City Council in 1980 with the assistance of various associations, including the Drainage Board, says: “The end of the Spit is of extreme importance to wading birds. It serves as a high tide roost for up to 2000 godwits and 4000 oyster catchers. These birds are subject to increasing

human and canine disturbances over the high tide period, and it is desirable to limit any development which could aggravate this problem.” As we know, they feed at low tide. I hope the Drainage Board will discourage these potentially dangerous helicopter trips.—Yours, etc.,
