Rakaia River
Sir,—The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce welcomes the support of the Lyttelton Harbour Board towards the chamber’s costs on making representations on the future of the Rakaia River. The chamber’s broad view is that any development has to take account of the competing interests, and that a middle way exists. The aim must be to create further significant employment in our region through agricultural development, while protecting the concerns of those fearful for the environment supported by existing water flows. The chamber certainly regards the Harbour Board as a commercial enterprise and unhesitatingly supported the board’s representations on the continuance of the Lyttel-ton-Chatham Islands shipping link. This support was at significant cost to the chamber. The Harbour Board’s welcome gesture shows the sort of unity of purpose that is needed if our region is to prosper. — Yours, etc., A. M. JOLLY, Vice-president. December 8, 1983.
