Legal aid
Sir,—After reading Ken Coates’s article on the legal system ip China (“The Press,” December .7), one cannot help but feel grateful to live in a free-enterprise society with a legal aid scheme which is clearly superior to the Chinese one. Our top lawyers can get paid $26.25 on criminal legal aid for a District Court criminal case, a massive $3.25 more than the pittance of $23 (30 yuan) paid to counterparts in China. — Yours, etc., M. J. KNOWLES, W. ROSENBERG. December 8, 1983.
