Commissions to tour drivers

Sir,—The subject of commissions has been raised at meetings of the Tour Drivers’ Guild on several occasions. Our members do not encourage soliciting commissions from retailers. It is fact that a lot of tour escorts from Japan and the United States do ask for, and receive, commissions. I would be interested to know from which company the alleged driver mentioned at the Small Business Tourist Forum was sacked for making $16,000 in commission. There is no knowledge among our members of a driver being dismissed for this reason. If a driver accepts a consideration, would it be any different from a sales person being paid commission, or tour operators receiving inter-company considerations? — Yours, etc.,

W. M. McILRAITH, President, South Island Tour Drivers’ Guild. December 7, 1983.
