Attempted murder case goes for trial
PA Levin A former Shannon woman charged with attempted murder of her baby daughter was committed for trial in the High Court at Palmerston North when the taking of depositions ended in the District Court at Levin yesterday. The woman, aged 20, who was granted suppression of name, entered no plea after Justices of the Peace found that a prima facie case had been established. The Court had heard evidence by the woman’s husband, whose name was also suppressed, about an incident in which the woman allegedly wrapped a length of plastic film over her five-month-old daughter’s head on the night of June 15.
The defendant was remanded on $5OOO bail, with a similar surety, to a date to be fixed in February.
