Third channel ‘unethical’
Setting up a third television channel when many parts of New Zealand still did not receive Television Two would be “unethical,” Christchurch North Young Nationals have decided. The branch has written to the Minister of Broadcasting, Dr Shearer, calling for TV2 to be sold to private enterprise, rather than introducing a third, regional channel.
The branch development officer, Miss J. Harrington, said the introduction of private enterprise into television would lead to competition and to an improvement in programme quality. It could be a first step to the removal of State involvement in television. “One member commented that private television could not possibly be worse than what we already have,” she said.
