Treatment starts for girl, 12

NZPA Knoxville A preacher’s daughter with a tumour the size of a football in her leg, received a small amount of chemo therapy yesterday under a court order, but her father has pledged to continue fighting the treatment on religious grounds. Pamela Hamilton, aged 12, received the chemotherapy while sleeping, said a spokeswoman for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. The chemotherapy was administered intravenously, a small amount put in slowly, she said. “She’s doing fine,” said a spokeswoman. Pamela will receive one such treatment a day for eight days unless the courts intervene.

The therapy was ordered by the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Doctors said that the treatment gives the girl her only hope of survival, but she still has at most, a 25 per cent chance of recovery from the tumour in her left leg, said Dr Frank Haraf, one of the girl’s doctors.
