Hawke victim of robbery
NZPA Canberra The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, was the victim of a robbery while staying at a Sydney hotel last year, his press office confirmed yesterday. A spokesman for Mr Hawke said that the robbery had been reported to the police, but declined to comment on a report in the “National Times” newspaper that the amount allegedly stolen was more than ?Aust46oo. The report claimed that the Federal Opposition had been given a copy of the police report on the breakin, but was uncertain whether it should direct questions in Parliament to Mr Hawke about the incident
According to the report a briefcase in Mr Hawke’s room was forced open and $3600 in Australian banknotes, $lOOO in American currency, and a quantity of travellers cheques stolen. However, it added there was nothing in the report to. suggest anything more than the fact that Mr Hawk was the unfortunate victim of a well-planned robbery.
