Board investigates hospital death
PA Whangarei The Northland Hospital Board yesterday said that it was seeking further reports about the death of Mrs Harriett Lewis, aged 87, at Whangarei Hospital on May 20, 1982. It also said it would seek a transcript of the evidence heard in the Coroner’s Court at Whangarei on Wednes-
day. On Wednesday, the Auckland Coroner, Mr A. D. Copeland, found that Mrs Lewis died from internal injuries suffered after a high pressure oxygen line was incorrectly connected to a tube inserted in her
throat. The board yesterday offered its deep sympathy to Mrs Lewis’s family. The board said it had received assurances from its senior staff that procedures in the recovery area (where Mrs Lewis died) were examined after the episode 16 months ago. Assurances were also received about the present training and numbers of recovery room staff.
The board chairman, Mr A. R. Cox, declined to comment about the incident but said that he would do so after the board had discussed the reports.
