Winds buffet Otago
PA Dunedin Winds reaching storm force struck parts of Otago for several hours yesterday, damaging houses, felling trees, closing Dunedin Airport and closing roads. Worst hit was the Ranfurly area in central Otago where a roof was lifted off a cottage, trees were blown over, and dust storms whipped up. Motorists towing caravans on the Alexandra-Ranfurly-Palmerston road
were forced to take shelter in gullies at Wedderburn. Flights at Dunedin Airport were disrupted and about 300 passengers delayed. No flights left Dunedin in the afternoon. Several roads were closed by the storm, including State highway six at Lowburn because of flooding and the Haast Pass road by a slip. The Te Anau-Milford road remained closed.
