Baby kidnap?

NZPA Sydney A huge police search was launched in Sydney’s western suburb of Marrlckville yesterday for a two-month-old baby believed to have been abducted by a mentally retarded man. More than 50 police and a helicopter were taking part in the search and a spokesman said house-to-house inquiries would continue through the night for any possible clues. The police said that Stephen Pearce, of Marrickville, was left in a blue stroller outside the Jewel

Food Store in Illawarra Road about midday while his mother and older brother went shopping. About 10 minutes after Mrs Karen Pearce and her son, March, aged four, entered the store, two women saw a mentally retarded man run off holding the baby and pushing the stroller.

The police said* the man was aged between 30 and 40, heavily built, and wearing blue jeans and a cream or yellow T-shirt. He was last seen heading towards Marrlckville Railway Station.
