War pensions

Sir,—The National Government effectively reduces war pensions, despite repeated assurances from Mr Muldoon. The war service pension received by myself and my wife has just been reduced by

$17.28 a fortnight, quite correctly, for my miserable Government superannuation, to which I contributed for 35 years, was increased — by a mere percentage of the cost of living adjustment. I have no quarrel with the means test principle, but there has been no increase for some years in the permissible income exemption of $l3OO, and the age supplement for those over 65 remains at $7B — once a useful sum, but now not buying a week’s groceries. Living standards were further reduced by terminating television fee rebates for pensioners, and freezing the income limit for local bodies rates relief. The Inland Revenue rates rebate is useless for those on incomes too small to tax.—Yours, etc.,

VARIAN J. WILSON. September 23, 1983.
