Health care

Sir,—Dr Selwyn Carson draws attention to the fact that many poor Sle are being denied necessary ical care because of their inability to meet professional fees, but I ask what has happened to the caring medical profession that is supposed to have tender loving care of the needy. Statistics show it to be among the highest paid of the professions, yet its spokesman intimates that the poor are being neglected. The medical profession derives benefits under our taxation laws that most other professional bodies do not get, because its reputation is that it serves without thought of money, and does not sue for fees. Doctors file returns on a cash basis because of this, and if Dr Carson is right, then that benefit should be removed and doctors treated like anybody else. — Yours, etc.,

J. MCDONALD. September 22, 1983.
