Kawerau waste for irrigation

PA Auckland Tasman Pulp and Paper Co., Ltd, is to experiment using effluent from its Kawerau mill for irrigation. At present, the waste — legnin, an organic material from wood tissue — is discharged into the Tarawera River. Although it discolours the water, the company says it is non-toxic. Tasman’s director of operations, Mr Barry Ashwin, said that the company was still concerned at the publicity surrounding the Tarawera River. If the waste was used for irrigation, the colour might change by the time it had seeped into the river, he said. “It has been tried with mixed success in some other places in the world but it has not been tried in New Zealand.” The company would experiment with a trial plot half a mile down the river, and hoped that the colour would be removed in the waste’s seepage through the ground, Mr Ashwin said.
