Little Budget child aid

PA Wellington The Budget will not significantly improve the position of disadvantaged children, according to the New Zealand Committee for Children. “We welcome the $lO a week increase in family rebate for low income families,” said the chairman, Mrs Margaret Lythgoe, in Wellington. “But it will not ease the burdens of larger families.”

Mrs Lythgoe said nothing had been done to relieve youth unemployment, which was a big worry for all New Zealanders concerned with children and young people, and the Budget had not reduced the cost of taking a child to the doctor. The committee was, however, pleased to see money being allocated to the Kohanga Reo Maori language nests, but the programme needed following up in the primary schools.
