Teacher training

Sir,.— The proposal put forward by the Department of Education regarding the rationalisation of teachers’ colleges is appalling and impractical To have each secondary major teaching option as the speciality of individual colleges will create many problems. Course options will be severely restricted and there will be a lack of flexibility. The cost of travel to train ait the appropriate centre will be veryftigh for trainees; e.g. trainees in some

economics from Nelson would have three years training in Dunedin and then a post-graduate one year course in Auckland. Secondary school leavers in the bottom of the North Island will be reluctant to travel to Auckland and Otago for training, and the immobility of trainees will also be a problem. The moving of the secondary physical education courses and the home economics courses to the Otago University will be a great blow to Christchurch Teachers’ College. Is this the end of teacher training at a professional level? — Yours, etc., KATHLEEN ALLEN, President, C.T.C. Trainees’ Association. July 15, 1983.
